This position will be focusing primarily on our Motive Power applications, which include industrial lift trucks and pallet jacks, rail equipment, mining equipment, and airline ground support equipment. Some of the motive power brands include Hawker, Ironclad, General Battery, and Fiamm. Wherever there is a need for motive power, EnerSys offers the perfect energy solution.

Job Purpose

This position supports new product developments in the areas of reserve and motive power energy storage systems. This Firmware Engineer will report to the Systems Engineering Manager and will be responsible for specification and development of embedded software on microcontroller based designs. The successful candidate should have experience developing and testing both bare-metal and RTOS code on modern microcontroller architectures including Renesas 32-bit RX and STM32F ARM Cortex devices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Firmware Engineer filling this position will be required to demonstrate detailed and in-depth technical knowledge and expertise in the following:

  • Development of embedded firmware design for bare metal and RTOS designs structures
  • Development of basic software interfaces to bring up microcontroller peripherals (ADCs, i2c, SPI, Timers, etc)
  • Implementation of control and signal processing algorithms in a computationally efficient manner on limited resource embedded targets.
  • Upgrading and expanding the functionality of existing wireless-based asset tracking solutions leveraging latest IoT radio technologies.
  • Comply with required development process and source code control using tools such as SVN and GIT.
  • Evaluate system requirements and decompose into applicable embedded software building blocks.
  • Interface with application-level gateways including embedded Linux systems using various communication methods including CANBUS, Serial, BLE.
  • Design, implement, and integrate new technologies towards automation of testing
  • Contribute to development and on-time execution of project schedules
  • Assist in the implementation of risk assessment tools such as FTA, FMEA, and HAZOPs

  • Strong experience in developing C code for embedded systems and microcontrollers
  • Demonstrated experience debugging code on real-time targets including standard lab equipment including oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
  • Familiarity with Linux and embedded Linux systems
  • Shows enthusiasm, motivation, and ability to work with technical engineers and scientists.
  • Provides high integrity and oversight of processes protecting intellectual property
  • Possesses efficient time management skills and ability to multi-task in a cross-functional team
  • Have excellent problem solving skills and the ability to write technical documents clearly and concisely

Education and/or Experience:

  • BS or MS in EE, Physics, Math or similar with 1-3 years’ experience in electrical engineering
  • 1 to 3 years’ experience developing and/or testing product performance and safety to meet applicable industrial standards and government regulations
  • Experience with energy storage or renewable energy systems is desired
  • Demonstrates attention to detail and problem solving skills.
  • Shows enthusiasm, motivation, and ability to work with technical engineers and scientists.
