Senior IoT Engineer, (R&D)
Position Location: Boca Raton
Reports to: Sr. Manager, R&D Product Development
Job Summary:
  • The Senior IoT Engineer will be responsible for the coordination of IoT integration and support on new connected products and existing connected products and systems. This individual is a specialist in connected objects that develops innovative services to help users to receive, control and manage information. The IoT engineer is also responsible for developing and managing a vast array of IoT devices, platforms, software, hardware, and systems through a combination of data technology and research. Remote location considered. Some travel may be required. This position will:
  • Lead the IoT engineering efforts on NPD projects from conception through product life while following Newell Brands Product Development Process
  • Research and Develop Strategic IoT partnerships, platforms, and solutions
  • Establish data analytics protocols, reporting and smart digital asset management
  • Work effectively with other disciplines including Product Development Engineering, Program Management, Validation Engineering, IT, Legal, Marketing, Industrial Design, Usability, Graphics, Manufacturing, Quality, and Sourcing
Job Responsibilities by Capability:
  • Business Acumen
  • Monitors project Profit & Loss (P&L) and key drivers that affect overall program financial health to ensure projects meet established objectives (e.g., margins, costs, revenue, schedule, etc.).
  • Examines program success requirements and drives path forward to achieve success in most timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Technical Leadership
  • Leads efforts to integrate devices, sensors, and software to support connected devices
  • Researches and implements integrated home solutions by directing supplier development and selection of software that allows IoT devices to function and connect to other devices or services.
  • Develops IoT specifications and specific program needs statements.
  • Manages partner relationships and the quoting process. Reviews project proposals cross-functionally to develop IoT specifications.
  • Performs competitive benchmarking and reviews the results to gain competitive understanding.
  • Works closely with legal, IT, outside IoT partners, manufacturers to deliver a system that meets Newell Brands data and component security requirements.
  • Participates in technical design reviews to ensure products are designed to specifications and will meet product security and safety requirements.
  • Performs in house beta testing during the prototyping stage, oversees production testing during the development stage and monitors the launch stage to ensure product deliverables are being met.
  • Problem Solving
  • Provides solutions to issues related to the connection of networks and platforms as well as IoT related components such as hardware, software, cloud service, data management and business partners.
  • Implements existing testing methodologies on a program level to conduct product validation and system safety verification.
  • Troubleshoots issues related to connected product, support, and systems.
  • Examines problems with a disciplined approach and uses the appropriate methodology to analyze and determine the preferred solution to technical challenges.
  • Reviews test results summaries and recommends action plans to improve product design.
  • Develops systems with the end consumer in mind. Demonstrates consumer centricity.
  • Communication
  • Works with internal and external partners to provide testing summaries with mitigation plans (if required) to communicate testing status and compliance activities.
  • Investigates popular point of view when necessary to provide alternative recommendations.
  • Escalates risks and concerns quickly, clearly, and to the appropriate audiences
  • Translates complex technical concepts in simple, clear language appropriate to the audience to gain cross-functional alignment.
  • Works with the regulatory and compliance team to presents emerging compliance requirements to product development team to ensure awareness and understanding of the regulatory landscape.
  • Organizational Agility
  • Participates as representative on cross-functional teams to work seamlessly across boundaries of company, culture, and geography for successful NPD.
  • Partners with the Home Appliances cross- functional organization and customers to balance the needs of connectivity, compliance, NPD, productivity, and product derivatives.
  • Technical Mastery
  • Incorporates an in depth understanding of computer programming and network security.
  • Establishes proper IoT test protocols, frequency, and maintenance plans.
  • Leads the architecture, chip selection and design approach for the IoT system.
  • Communicates clear IoT architecture and principles as well as device and data security.
  • Drives the global IoT strategy and employs a system for data collection, data management and data analytics for the Home Appliances IoT platform.
  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of core discipline and basic knowledge of other disciplines relevant to business segment to drive effective program execution.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/ Computer Engineering or equivalent technical field required.
  • 5-7 years of IoT product development and mass deployment experience required.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal and project management skills with excellent communication skills-verbal and written.
  • Has experience working with external IoT partners on both the business and technical aspects of IOT integration.
  • Demonstrates expertise in problem solving techniques and methodologies.
  • Demonstrates an in depth understanding of computer programming and network security.
  • Demonstrates experience with front-end and back-end systems and custom-built firmware and hardware.
  • Demonstrates ability to establish data acquisition needs and data analytics output.
  • Demonstrates capability in defining and adhering to mobile app, cloud, voice assist interfaces.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of relevant manufacturing processes.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform in a team environment.
  • Demonstrates strong Static/Dynamic analytical skills.
  • Familiar with multiple programming languages such as Embedded-C, Embedded C++, JavaScript, and Python.
  • Working knowledge of software such as Netbet, Neura and OpenSensors, Node.js, Linux OS.
  • Working knowledge in sensors, Big Data and machine learning algorithms and artificial intelligence.
